Commuter Practices Thrive with New Developments and Supportive Measures |
In Stafford County, the practice of slugging—a form of casual carpooling—has experienced a notable resurgence, bolstered by recent infrastructure improvements and supportive initiatives.
On August 13-14, 2024, GWRideConnect conducted a study revealing significant slugging activity at the Staffordboro Park and Ride Lot off Route 610. Notably, for the first time since the pandemic, slugging was observed at the Warrenton Road Park and Ride Lot on Route 17, with surveyors counting four riders and four vehicles on August 13. This marks a promising return of slugging to the area.
Leigh Anderson, GWRideConnect Program Director, highlighted the role of OmniRide commuter buses in this revival, stating, "With OmniRide now servicing more commuter lots, slugging is making a modest but promising return." She also noted potential for expansion to lots on Route 630 Courthouse Road in Stafford and Route 1 Commonwealth Drive in Spotsylvania, both served by OmniRide.
Since its inception in the 1970s, slugging has been an effective carpooling method, reducing vehicle miles traveled along the I-95 corridor. This practice involves drivers picking up non-paying passengers at designated commuter lots and dropping them off at established destinations, with the Pentagon being a popular terminus.
Infrastructure developments have further supported this commuting method. In December 2023, OmniRide introduced three new express routes from Stafford, Falmouth, and Spotsylvania, providing cost-effective, stress-free options for residents south of the extended I-95 Express Lanes. These routes offer zero fares from December 11 through January 12, enhancing accessibility for commuters.
Additionally, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is evaluating the ParkZen app, a smart parking mobile application that enables travelers to view real-time parking availability in six commuter lots, including those in Stafford County. This initiative aims to alleviate parking uncertainties, a known deterrent to using transit and carpooling options.
Further improvements are underway, such as the construction of a new Park and Ride commuter lot along Olde Forge Drive near Route 17 Business. This project includes approximately 500 parking spaces, lighting, a bicycle rack, and dedicated areas for transit arrivals and departures, with construction slated to begin in October 2027 and completion expected by mid-2029.
These developments reflect a concerted effort to enhance commuting options in Stafford County, fostering a supportive environment for slugging and other ridesharing practices. As infrastructure continues to evolve, commuters can anticipate more efficient and accessible travel experiences. |
